Wet Trim vs Dry Trim | How to trim buds the best way?

Why do growers trim cannabis buds in the first place?

  • Appearance – In magazines, at the dispensary and in pictures online nearly all the buds you’ll see are completely manicured, or at least somewhat trimmed. This is the appearance we’ve come to associate with “good weed” and so untrimmed buds may look less appealing to some people.
  • Harshness – leaves can be more “harsh” on your throat/lungs than flowers when smoking cannabis, so trimming off extra leaf matter can improve the “smoothness” of your buds when smoking.
  • THC Concentration – the sugar leaves on your buds inherently have a lower concentration of THC than bud (even trichome-encrusted ones!), which means that you’re getting less THC gram-for-gram than with bud.

Wet trimming is better for:

  • Beginners to growing as it is easier to get it right
  • Avoiding mold
  • Prettier buds

Dry trimming is better for:

  • Flavor and aroma
  • Allowing your buds and leaves to dry out at their own pace
  • Shortening the cure time

Wet trimmingWhen you trim your weed wet, you do it immediately after you cut down a plant and before you dry and cure.
Pros:

  • With less moisture-filled foliage attached to the flowers, the dry will naturally speed up. This can be helpful in a humid climate in which you’re fighting mold problems and need to keep things moving along quickly.
  • While plants are still this fresh, trichomes, a.k.a. the THC-filled glands that get you high, are super sticky. Handled at this time, that stickiness helps them stay better connected to the plants, preserving them for later enjoyment.
  • Wet trimming is probably the easiest for novices. Before leaves dry up and curl inward, it’s easy to navigate your snips inside buds to remove full stems of leaves.

Cons:

  • Your flowers won’t be as full of flavor as they would be following dry trimming.

Dry TrimmingWhen you trim dry bud, you do not cut any leaves off after harvest. Instead, you let the marijuana flowers dry and cure first. Only after they have been dried and cured do you remove the excess leaves.
Pros:

  • Higher quality buds
  • No need to trim all at once

Cons

  • More difficult
  • Slower
  • Higher risk of mold

THE PERFECT BALANCEWith all this in mind, here is how you can balance the methods and try to obtain the pros of each one.
Trim off any large fan leaves and big sugar leaves that protrude out from the buds. Leave behind some of the smaller, sugary leaves. These will still keep the drying process slow and will protect your buds and their crucial trichomes. When the branches have fully dried up and finally snap instead of bend, this is where you trim the rest. Don’t just throw these away! Excess plant matter or “trim” is an excellent way of making edibles, tinctures, and even hash.

But you must choose a perfect grow tent for your indoor gardening.

Why are Grow Tents Important for Growing Marijuana?
First off, they ensure that all the light is contained inside the area and is focused on the plants. Thanks to the enclosed nature of the tents and the thick canvas, the light is trapped inside and the only place where the light can be absorbed are the plants because practically everything else would reflect it. This maximizes the efficiency of your grow light as well.

Hydroponic grow tents are an excellent way of keeping your growing discreet. While most growers grow their weed in a separate room, they’d still not grow it out in the open making it obvious for everyone that they are growing weed. These grow tents allow the plants to be kept in an enclosed space where they can be zipped up and won’t really attract attention.

A Growers Choice: Wet vs Dry Trimming 2020 Updated

Trimming is one of the least appreciated aspects of cannabis; it’s also one of the least understood. The average person may think of trimming as a simple snip job that removes the buds from the stems—but there’s a lot more that goes into it.

There are two typical methods of trimming: wet and dry. If you ask growers which is better, you’ll find a roughly 50/50 split in responses. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and you’ll need to decide for yourself which one works best for your business.

Dry trimming
Dry trimming takes at least twice as much time as wet trimming, plus the 10-15 extra days of the drying process. Once dry, you will have to remove the curled leaves surrounding the buds, which can be done with trimming scissors. The process, though, might prove a bit too strenuous.

Accordingly, large-scale producers who dry trim their buds generally invest in professional trimmers. These are electric machines specifically designed for dry trimming that allow growers to get done with their trimming in a matter of hours, instead of days. The only downside here is the price.

Wet trimming
Wet trimming is the normal way to harvest your cannabis plants. You either cut the whole plant down and start removing as much leaf material as possible with fingers/scissors, or trim one branch at a time. This method is preferred by the vast majority of cannabis cultivators worldwide.

The disadvantage of wet trimming is the time it takes. For commercial growers, hired hands will be required for post-harvest processing. This can be costly and a security risk. Home growers may need to wet trim in stages for larger harvests, especially if you favour the ScrOG method. 2-3 days of trimming solo by hand is hard graft.

Dry Trim Vs. Wet Trim: Final Verdict

  • You should dry trim if…
  • the quality of the bud is more important than anything else
  • you are not able to get through all the trimming in one day
  • you need to move your harvest off-site as quickly as possible

You should wet trim if…

  • you want to get trimming done quickly (to save on labor costs, for example)
  • you have limited drying space
  • you are in an especially humid climate

What size tent do I need for 4 plants?

What Determines Tent Size Per Plant?
Your planting techniques determine the number of plants to be planted in a particular tent size. Majorly, factors such as lighting conditions, plant growth style, size and shape of your planting containers, and yield expectations determine how many plants you can plant in a marijuana grow tent of a particular size.

However, among these factors, plant training style is the most important factor that determines the number of plants per a certain size of a tent.

Size
If you only plan on growing 2-3 plants at a time, you can choose a tent that’s about 4×4 grow tent. A good rule of thumb is to make sure to have 1 square foot of space per plant within the grow box. This will make sure that your plants have enough space to grow to their full capacity.

So, if you want to grow 4 plants to full maturity, you’ll want to have at least 5 feet by 5 feet of space. The increase in space is necessary for the light to hit throughout your plants, so you don’t miss out on optimal growth.

Grow Tent Height
Most grow tents that you look at will be between 4 -7 foot in height.

If left to their own devices, cannabis plants can grow much taller than this.

Therefore, it’s important that you perfom some basic training techniques to ensure that you’re plant will not grow too tall.

It is practically light proof; while it says it is 100% light proof, it is more like 90% lightproof, but with some simple tweaking you could make this tent into a completely light proof tent.

What is the difference between LED and COB LED Grow Light?

WHAT IS COB (CHIP ON BOARD)?
A Chip On Board LED Downlight consists of a single LED chip, mounted on the downlight, compared to an array of LED’s like an SMD. As the single cluster of LED’s are mounted in one point, they require greater cooling, so a larger heat sink, usually made of aluminium, must be mounted to dissipate the heat. As more material is required to manufacture a COB LED heat sink, this usually increases the cost slightly.

The Advantage of COB LED Grow Lights
So what is exactly is Chip-on-Board technology? The most notable design advantage of COB packaging is its ability to accommodate nine or more LED diodes on a single chip. LED diodes are bonded directly onto a ceramic, aluminum, or copper substrate to form an array on a single module. When a COB LED grow light is turned on, these diodes emit a controlled light beam with no visible individual light points. Because these lights can pack more chips into the light-emitting area, COB LED lighting maximizes the lumen output per inch and provides a denser array of light vs. other lighting options.

COB is known for better lumen per watt ratios and heat efficiency. COB chips can produce a higher amount of lumens with less energy with a minimum of 80 lumens per watt. You can find it in all types of bulbs and applications, like the flash of your mobile phone or point-and-shoot camera.

Light density increases significantly as there are more diodes packed together in a tight space. And because these many diodes function as one large LED chip, they generate a greater intensity of light that penetrates deeper into the canopy. COB technology also boasts a higher color rendering index, which means human eyes perceive objects under the glow of a COB LED grow light as their natural color. Without the purple glow associated with SMD LED lights, growers have an easier time identifying discoloration that could indicate a fungal attack, light burn, or any other threat to plant health.

Will a 315w CMH produce bigger better buds than an LED using the same watts?

Over the past twenty years, grow lights have evolved. We have an array of modern light systems that can grow plants, like Ceramic Metal Halides (CMH) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) systems.

There are a lot of nuanced differences between the two light systems, and I’m going over as much as I can in this quick overview. We’re going to cover light spectrum, canopy penetration, cultivation size, environmental control, investment cost, and budget.

For growers who are looking to harvest ½ half to one ounce of cannabis each month, LEDs may be your best choice. At this size, LEDs are energy efficient, run cool, and need little to almost no setup! They get better yields than fluorescents, but don’t run as hot as an HPS of similar wattage.

  • With no heat output, it is easier to deal with, and you don’t need to purchase extra equipment for ventilation/cooling.
  • Have built-in cooling that pushes heat up and away from the plants. It is an easy set up, as the smaller sized LEDs simply need to be plugged into the wall and hung up over your plant.
  • Some growers believe LEDs produce more resinous bud. Combining LEDs with HPS grow lights has produced great results for some growers, though more testing is needed.

CMH fixtures put off quite a bit less heat than HPS grow light, but still produce heat. You are going to want to place them higher than you would with LED.  Recommended height is 24 inches from the canopy of your plants to avoid bleaching or burning your leaf’s. CMH grow lights are not air-cooled and will direct heat generated down towards the plant canopy.  Proper ventilation and airflow are one of the most important parts of a successful grow, regardless of which lighting you choose.  Oscillating fans and intake/exhaust fans are highly recommended.
On the other hand, if you are restricted in your height, LEDs can be placed much closer to your canopy. The recommended distance is 12-18 inches from your canopy. The back end of the diodes produce heat through a heatsink.  The heat sink hits the aluminum reflector of the fixture to help disperse the heat over a larger area.LED grow lights are budding with newfound popularity because growers are learning to manipulate the LED light spectrum. Growers can now create custom-designed spectrums with LED that use the ideal ratio of blue to red light needed to yield lush and potent marijuana flowers. And when growers can control the light spectrum, they can grow better plants with less energy.
LED lights also offer better overhead heat coverage for indoor growth. Growers need an even canopy to grow marijuana properly, and LED reduces the risk of hot spots and dead zones in the cannabis canopy.
Through it all, though, there’s still one factor that seems to stand out from them all: cost. LED’s are great at getting your plants where they need to be, but the problem is they’re expensive.
CMH’s, on the other hand, is far more cost-effective than LED’s. Sure, you may have to combat heat eventually, but compared to the output of an HPS or MH grow light, you’ll still be saving money on in the long run compared to other lights on the market. At the end of the day, you’re going to have to spend money on a grow light. CMH’s are better priced for personal grows as well as warehouses, and everything in between.

Which way to go? HPS Grow Light or LED Grow Light?

The question of LED vs HPS and which is “better” has been around since the LED grow light hit the market. While LED grow lights have certainly come a tremendous way since, can they compete, watt for watt, with the HPS grow light? And where do other types of HPS grow lights come into play?
Advantages of LEDs over HPS

LED diodes are very electrically efficient, which could save you money over time (though the jury is still out when it comes to whether LEDs get better yields than HPS watt-for-watt). Additionally, where an HPS bulb needs to be replaced every few grows to maintain its brightness, individual LED diodes keep their brightness practically forever. With an LED grow light, it’s almost certain something else will break on the lamp before any diodes start losing their brightness.

  • LED grow lights last six times as long!
  • Eco-friendly LED grow lighting uses no toxic metals.
  • Energy savings range from 50%-70% over HID lights.
  • No cooling necessary; no plant burn and decreased risk of fires.
  • LED directional lighting requires no reflectors.
  • Maximum chlorophyll absorption and flower production.
  • Less frequent watering.
  • Discretion assured — no thermal footprint.

HPS Grow Lights
Advantages of HPS Grow Lights

  • HPS grow lights are capable of producing an intense amount of light, which can increase cannabis flowering.
  • There are a wide variety of HPS grow lights available, so options have become more standardized.
  • The initial start-up costs are lower with HPS grow lights than LED lights.

Drawbacks of HPS Grow Lights

  • HPS grow lights require more power and are less energy efficient than LED lights.
  • HPS grow lights have a shorter shelf life in comparison to LED lights.
  • The intense lighting of HPS makes adequate airflow and ventilation essential.
  • Setting the optimal temperature can be challenging, particularly in confined spaces.
  • HPS grow lights increase costs substantially in the long-term

Will CMH Grow Light Produce Better Quality Buds than COB LED Grow Light?

What is CMH Grow Light?
The crux of the matter; what are LEC lights and why are they sometimes called ceramic metal halide (CMH) or ceramic discharge metal halide (CDM)? Thankfully, all terms mean the same thing, and as awareness of the technology increases, these terms are becoming interchangeable. An LEC light uses a ceramic arc tube, rather than the quartz version found in regular MH lights. The result is a more natural colour, producing more lumens per watt and lasting a lot longer. The most common model of LEC fixture is the 315W with a “4200K” colour bulb.

What is a COB LED?
A COB (short for Chip-on-Board), is an LED packaging technology that describes mounting multiple LED chips directly onto a substrate to form a single module. Multiple LEDs, minuscule in size, are wired and packaged together into a single ceramic or copper board so that they function as a sole light source.

When a COB LED grow light is energized, it appears more like a lighting panel than multiple individual lights as usually the case with other LED packages, like when using several SMD LEDs mounted closely together.

Pros of CMH Grow Lights

  • LECs last on average twice as long as MH or HPS bulbs.
  • LECs, because of the ceramic element, burn much hotter than MH, producing a light closer to that of natural sunlight. Due to their insulating value though, they also have a lower heat output, which means there is less likelihood of burning plant leaves as compared to MH or HPS bulbs.
  • LECs can produce light spectrum sufficient to support both the vegetative stage of plant growth as well as its flowering stage.

Cons of CMH Grow Lights

  • Heat Generation: I know this is also listed as an advantage above. Quality CMH grow lights emit much less heat than HPS or MH, but still more than LED.
  • Flowering: CMH grow lights are very good at flowering, especially those with a warmer color spectrum (around 3000K), like the Philips 3100K bulb we recommend.

Pros of COB LED lights

  • These lights have more number of diodes as compare to SMD lights. Hence from a small amount of energy or watt it generates higher amount of energy.
  • Since these lights can produce higher amount of light from smaller space, these lights are efficiently used in flash lights of a camera or mobile phone
  • These lights generate higher lumen lights in less watt. Also, the heat generation is very less as compared to other lights. This aspect makes it very appropriate for indoor plantation as it would not require separate cooling agents.

Cons of COB LED lights

  • These lights do not emit different colours as compared to SMD lights. It output comes in a single colour. Hence, chip on board LED lights cannot be used as colour changing bulbs like SMD lights.
