What are the pros and cons of running a 315W CMH grow light compared to regular HID grow light?

It seems that with each passing day, a new technology or piece of equipment arrives on the cannabis scene promising better yields or reduced cost. Like all things in life, those kind of statements are easy to say, but hard to back up. If, however, cost-effective growing environments sound like an appealing topic, CMH grow lights could be the next step in future-fit lighting solutions.

What is a Ceramic Metal Halide Grow Light?
First of all, what are these lights actually called? Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)? Light Emitting Ceramic (LEC)? Or are they Ceramic Discharge Metal Halide (CDM)?

The truth is that all those different names are talking about the same Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) technology. LEC is actually a trademarked term for a CMH brand. In order to avoid confusion, I’m going to be using CMH in this article, which is the most common term.

Ceramic Metal Halide grow lights are basically a variation of MH grow lights with a little of HPS added into the mixture. A CMH uses a ceramic arc tube similar to those used in HPS grow lights instead of the quartz used in traditional metal halide grow lights.

Advantages Of CMH Light

Spectrum
The CMH light spectrum combines the red-heavy HPS spectrum with the blue-heavy MH spectrum in one bulb, making it the perfect light for all stages of growth. With a high CRI, it is extremely close to natural sunlight, which is great for your plants and for your eyes (plants look more natural, making it easier to spot any discolorations or other issues).

Better PAR Efficiency
One of the reasons many growers are switching to CMH grow lights is due their excellent PAR efficiency, which is much better than that of many other types of grow lights. Other grow light models such as MH and HPS waste too much energy, which does not help with crop growth.
Heat Consumption
Despite running at high temperatures, CMH grow lights produce less heat compared to many other grow light models in the market. The bulbs of the grow lights do not burn the leaves of the crops and it is one of the best options to use in a grow room or a GROW TENT for a good yield from efficient growth.

Disadvantages Of CMH Light

Like everything else, there’s not a perfect lighting solution. Thus, the CMH also comes with its own disadvantages. The UVB rays that these lights produce are said to be harmful to humans. Adequate safety equipment may be necessary in order to reduce any damage to eyes or skin. Currently, the high setup cost of the CMH can also be seen as a downside.

Since the CMH technology is still new, it costs so much more than the traditional bulbs, such as the CFL, although this is somewhat seen as a double-edged sword. While the initial cost may be high, its long-term running cost is close to that of LED grow light or HPS grow light.

PowerSun 315W CMH Fixture

PowerSun 315W 120V/240V Fixture CMH + Bulb in Canada - IndoorGrowingCanada

The hottest technology in energy efficient HID lighting is now available. Ceramic Metal Halide, or CMH for short (some refer to it as CMH), is becoming more popular in the horticultural industry.

The CMH lamps have a very broad light spectrum which is more similar to the sun itself than any other form of HID lamp. We have taken CMH technology and increased its operational efficiency, making the most comprehensive spectrum of light output for an HID fixture even better. The CMH lamps also have increased efficiency in AR/Watt compared to other forms of HID grow light.

The CMH fixture can be used as a primary veg light; a primary light for SOG applications; or a supplemental full spectrum light for large flowering operations.

How much humidity does my indoor cannabis plants? 2020 Updated

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air, expressed as a percentage. The humidity is very important for a marijuana plant because it determines the degree of evaporation. The lower the humidity, the higher the evaporation pressure and the more water and nutrients your marijuana plant can absorb. However, if the evaporation pressure becomes too high, the plant will protect itself against dehydration and its stomata will close. Consequently it won’t be able to absorb any water anymore, and the grow will stagnate.

Growth Stages and Humidity Control

For clone rooms, 19 percent of research participants said the ideal humidity level is 56%-60%. The same number of respondents said that, ideally, the humidity level should fall in the range of 76% to 80%. In all, the research showed that desired humidity levels in clone rooms varies from 40%-45% to above 80%.

Seedlings and the vegetative phase

Younger plants that are in their vegetative phase will feel at their best in a humidity of 40-70%. Keeping the percentage at this range will increase the growth of your plant massively. In this period the plant is able to grow lot’s of new leaves and branches because there is still enough moist in the air for them to consume. This eventually leads to a faster and more extensive growing plant.

Flowering cannabis is best within the ranges of 55-60 percent relative humidity. This is the same as temperature, the more consistent the humidity is, it will promote healthy and evener growth.

Late Flowering Stage

Humidity levels of 25% to 40% will provide perfect growing conditions. Watering plants during the dark cycle will help lower moisture. Lowering grow room temperatures at this time will serve the plants well, too, although a temperature reduction will inevitably occur from the shorter light cycle and the break from high-intensity light—and associated higher temperatures—the plants receive at this time. The lower moisture and temperatures will maximize yield and quality.

Use Humidifiers And/Or Dehumidifiers

The amount of moisture can be easily altered through the use of humidifiers for plants or dehumidifiers. These devices conveniently add or take out vapor from the air without the need to manipulate other variables. Just make sure to get the appropriate size for the grow area.

Smaller humidifiers work just as fine, but investing in a larger one eliminates the need to refill several times a day. Sizing a dehumidifier, on the other hand, is a little bit trickier. An important thing to remember is that plants transpire 97% of the water absorbed. Estimating the total water input in the garden will help identify the right device.

The great thing about these tents is so long as your ventilation and airflow are good, the lights you choose are up to you. Keep in mind what we’ve mentioned before: if you need to set up multiple lights to achieve a specific wattage, do so with the strongest lights you can. Avoid using lots of low-powered lights to achieve the same goal, because chances are their canopy penetration and overall lumen output will be lower than it would be with stronger lights that total the same overall wattage.

How high should you have your quantum boards from your seedlings? 2020 Updated

You’ve got grow lights for weeds, your plants, all of your liquid nutrients, and everything you need to grow. You set up your grow tent, set your plants in place, strap your rope hangers to your lights and hang ’em. But before you switch those lights on, are you sure you know how high you need to hang them above your plants? Hanging your Quantum Board LED Grow Light too low can burn your plants, but hanging them too high can leave them stretched and weak. Some grow lights need to be hung far away from plants so they don’t get bleached, but some lights are too weak to hang more than 10 inches away- so what do you do?

LED Quantum Boards Placement For Seedling Stage
Seedlings need the least intensity and most distance between the canopy and the lights. You may have the instinct to blast these little guys with high-intensity light to promote fast growth. The truth is, they’re young, vulnerable, and likelier to thrive with a gentler approach.

LED Quantum Boards Distance Chart

How long should I keep LED Quantum Boards on my seedlings?

This gives you four situations.

1) If the cost of real estate is higher, then you want to move things through your space quickly. This means that you will be paying for more hours of light (18 or so) to move crops along.

2) If the cost of electricity is higher but you have plenty of space, then you’ll want to reduce lighting a bit (12 or so hours). This means that your crops will grow slower.

3) If both costs are equally high like they are at our farm here in Laramie, then you’ll find a balance. We give our crops about 14 hours each day.

4) If both costs are equally low, then go ahead and run them fast, at about 18 hours a day. (Just remember to give crops everything else that they need as well, like airflow and CO2, or they won’t be able to use all that light.

How much pressure does it take to make rosin? Guide for Beginners

How Much Pressure To Make Rosin?

A lot of people who make their own rosin press machine get 20-ton jack presses, because they think more pressing power is better. That is not quite true.

The figure that is important is psi (pounds per square inch) at the bag. The overall pressing power of a press is only one factor that affects psi at the bag.

Another factor is the size of the rosin bags (which is obviously also related to the size of the pressing plates). The ideal plates and bag are long and narrow. A rectangular shape gives you more perimeter (where the rosin can escape the bag) and less area in the middle (where the rosin can get stuck).

Rectangular bags thus give you better yields from a smaller pressing area, i.e. the total size of the bag in square inches (or square centimeters). And since the surface area of the bag is smaller, you need less overall pressing power to deliver the required psi.

How to calculate Platen PSI for your Rosin Press:
Platen PSI is simply calculated by taking the total force and dividing it by the size of your bag, not the size of your plates. In this instance, we’ll say you are maxing out our 4×7 V2 Lowtemp Press (20 ton capable) with a 3″x6″ bag of material. For round numbers, we’ll say you’re utilizing half of what the cylinder can generate: 10 tons (2,000lbs per ton), or 20,000 lbs of force.

3″x6″ pouch= 18 square inches
10 tons of force= 20,000lbs of force
20,000 lbs / 18 sq in = 1,111 Platen PSI

Which are better? CMH Grow Lights or HPS Grow Lights?

CMH Grow Lights vs HPS
Growing plants indoors poses all kinds of problems, but thankfully, modern technology has the solutions that readers are looking for.  Arguably the best of these available on today’s markets is the ceramic metal halide, or CMH, grow light.  Whether readers are looking into indoor growing for the first time or they’re just looking to upgrade from less efficient and less effective lights, they can read on to find out about a few of the advantages of investing in this impressive, thoroughly modern technology.

Advantages Of CMH Grow Light
Spectrum
The CMH grow light spectrum combines the red-heavy HPS spectrum with the blue-heavy MH spectrum in one bulb, making it the perfect light for all stages of growth. With a high CRI, it is extremely close to natural sunlight, which is great for your plants and for your eyes (plants look more natural, making it easier to spot any discolorations or other issues).

Efficiency
Ceramic metal halide gives you a much higher PAR (the amount of light that is usable by plants) per watt than any other type of lighting, apart from the most expensive LED grow lights.

Long-Lasting
Ceramic arc tubes have an advantage over other tubes and bulbs because they are resistant to heat and other problems. This makes the grow lights last longer than others without breaking down. The grow lights run for 24,000 hours, which is equal to running for a period of three years. For 20,000 hours, the grow light keeps a constant lighting and heat strength of 80%.

Advantages  OF HPS Grow Light
They Usually Come in Kits – Purchasing HPS grow lights can be easy because they come in sets. This means that you do not need to purchase anything else anymore because you can already get what you need.
Energy Efficient – No need to worry about how much you are going to spend because you know that they are energy efficient.

Can Prompt Flowering Plants to Flower – Since they can provide red lights, you can be sure that they will be able to let plants flower adequately.

HPS is still the king of yield per square foot, however CMH is now the leader in yield per watt. CMH also has the yields the best quality and has the best overall light spectrum available.

315w CMH bulbs are the closest to natural sunlight available of any grow light on the market. CMH bulbs are available in 3100k & 4200k spectrums. 3100k is for flowering. 4200k bulbs are designed specifically for veg.

315w CMH bulbs put off slightly less than 1/3 the heat of HPS, although although after taking into consideration the smaller light footprint, they end up producing about 40% less heat than HPS to cover the same area. This can be a cost effective option for people with existing single ended HPS setups looking to switch over to the new technology or convert half their HPS to CMH to balance out the light spectrum in their grow room.

What is an automatic trimmer for cannabis? 2020 Updated

Introduction
Growing cannabis from seeds or clones, until they mature and develop cloves, involves a lot of work. You tend to spend plenty of resources to ensure that you achieve an abundant harvest. But what happens afterward? The work never stops at harvesting. There is even more work that you need to do before you can package the marijuana and introduce it into the market. One crucial step that you should perform carefully is bud trimming.

What does Automatic Trimmer mean?
An automatic trimmer is a tool used for trimming leaves and buds from marijuana plants. It is less labor intensive than hand trimming, but is generally only possible if you have dried the plant first.

Included in the automatic trimmer category of cannabis processing equipment are both hand-held automatic (electric) trimmers, as well as tumble trimmers that shake up the plant material during the trimming process.

The cost of a quality weed trimmer machine may seem steep at first glance, but they can end up saving you a lot of time and money in the long run.

The pros and cons of Machine Trimming

Pros
The quickest method to get your cannabis from the drying room to curing jars, machine trimming cannabis saves growers time and money after the initial price of the weed trimmer bowl. Machine trimmers turn the daunting process into a painless procedure, all while collecting trim in a sterile environment for concentrate processing later on.

Cons
Generally speaking, machine trimmers have a poor reputation. They’re known for over trimming buds, turning them into a generic football shape and cutting off valuable flower material.

Which color causes the most cannabis growth? 420 Guide 2020 Updated

What is the Color Spectrum of Light?
Although natural light might appear white to us, it is actually made up of many different colors. You can see this in action when you put light through a prism, or if you catch the sight of a rainbow. When light is refracted into its individual parts, you can see all the colors that make up that light!

Over the years, we’ve learned that plants actually make “decisions” about how to grow based on the spectrum of light they receive. A different color spectrum can change how cannabis germinates, grows and even makes buds! Although we don’t have a lot of options to change the spectrum of sunlight when growing outdoors, we have almost complete control of the spectrum when growing cannabis indoors since we’re using grow lights for weed!

Blue for Vegetative
Most people use blue lights during the vegetative stage. This will encourage the cannabis plant to be short and squat and to have large, healthy leaves.

Indoor growers will typically use compact fluorescent lamps, T5/T8 lighting fixtures, or metal halide bulbs during the first several weeks. This encourages the plants to stay compact.

Red for Flowering
Most people use red or yellow grow lights that have higher ratios of red during the flowering stage. This helps encourage the plants to promote budding and grow tall. It is also possible for plants to get into the flowering stage more quickly if you use red light compared.

Green Light and Seed Germination
Green light mediates seed germination in some species. Seeds use green light to evaluate whether the environment is good for growing. If a seed germinates in a shady spot, it can be detrimental to the plant because it will not get enough light to grow. A seed that senses a shaded environment may avoid these adverse conditions by staying dormant and not germinating1. Shade environments are enriched in green relative to red and blue light.

Cirrus Titan T250 /T500 COB LED Grow Light

Cirrus Titan 3 LED Grow Light

The T500 is about equivalent to a 1000w hps grow light, but most first-time LED growers will probably get lower yields than they did with HPS. Much of that is due to the differences in growing with HPS light and with LED light.

Once you’ve gotten used to the differences, you can expect yields well above those of a 1000 watt HPS bulb. More importantly, the quality will be much higher, with an increase in resin production of up to 20%.

Cirrus’ Leaf app lets you control the spectrum (or choose one of the many presets) from your smartphone or tablet. You can control the brightness of each part of the spectrum. If you want to turn off UV light and turn down the reds during vegging, you can do that. If you want to have the UV light come on for only two hours every afternoon, you can do that, too.

Lighting Science VividGro V2 Grow Fixture

Lighting Science VividGro V2 Grow Fixture - LED Grow Lights Depot

The VividGro 2’s performance-engineered, broad color spectrum can significantly stimulate plant growth while drastically reducing energy consumption by utilizing specific lighting wavelengths – at 450 and 660 nanometers.

The V2 Fixture has a rated life of 60,000 hours (L70), far longer than conventional high-pressure sodium (HPS) or other HID lamps, and significantly more than the life of many competing LED fixtures. Since VividGro™ V2 uses only 588 watts, far less energy than standard HPS fixtures, which typically use 1000 watts, the energy savings are dramatic.

This is by no means a complete list. But we have done our best to hand-pick the best and proven LED lights for growing on the market. Whatever choices you make, we believe you’ll enjoy large results with your indoor garden.

How to build a cob grow light? 420 Guide for Cannabis Beginners

What is COB LED lighting?

First, not all LED lighting is created the same way. LED stands for light emitting diode. A diode is an electric component which has two terminals. The electric current causes the diode to send off a bright light which surrounds a small bulb. A COB LED grow light is a little different than a standard LED light. COB stands for chips on board and refers to the fact that this style of light has multiple LED light chips built into one module instead of many individual modules. This gives the appearance of a lighting panel as opposed to individual tiny bulbs.
FANS

Most COB LED grow lights include fans because they’re necessary – the heatsink isn’t enough to quickly dissipate the heat produced. These fans help protect the life of the LEDs, and they help reduce the heat your plants will feel when they get close to those lights.
Why even consider building a LED grow light yourself?
Good grow LED tech is expensive. With 2-4 $ per Watt you can end up paying thousands of dollars on the best lights.
The advantage of this is mostly, that you get a finished plug&play module with things like warranty and product testing. In the case of DIY LED Kits sold by Horticulture Lighting Group, this is not the case. The sets you buy there are great, but its way cheaper to build them on your own.

All LED grow lights are wired in series by connecting the driver’s positive site to the positive side of the first LED. The same LED`s negative side connects to the next LED`s positive side, continue this until you reach the last LED, connect the remaining negative LED terminal to the negative side of the driver. In the below wiring diagram the potentiometer and resistor are only needed if an externally adjustable driver is used.

Power up the cooling
Now that the light works, the last step is to connect the cooling to the power. This is why you have to buy a 4-Way Y-connector. This is used to wire all the fans on the coolers together. Then you just connect the remaining wire to a sufficient power source (12 V, 1 A) and you are done. The cable from the Y-connector has four wires and are color coded as shown here. You only need 12VDC and GND to run the fans. If you are clever you make use of the PWM cable as well to lower the rotation speed if needed.
